Calum’s List

The Actual List

Mick Moore established this website in 2012.
Mick died.
This site has been inherited by Calum
Calum's first said no thankyou.
But Calum also made a promise to Mick:
To reduce the number of debt-suicides.
This should actually be named "Michael's List"
For reasons known only to a friend who has died,
it was, instead, named "Calum's List" when it began!

Now, 15 years later, to repay a debt to Michael, Calum
and his team are now custodians of this site.
"Calum's List" is and always will be a memorial to the
60 friends who took their lives or died where welfare reform or
debt problems had some culpability in their deaths.

This "list" has 60 friends or family that originate from Michael Moore's
original disability support website forum...
5,000 members: hence the large number of 60 deaths named below.

The national debt-suicide figure is between 2,821 and 81,140 souls.

The new custodians of this website believe the best way to
honour and remember those who have died is to help...

STOP

folk taking their lives and/or living in debt-misery.

Elsewhere on this site will be a whole new way to stop debt-deaths.

Calum’s List

Memorial Pages

A MINIMUM OF 60 PEOPLE ON THIS TERRIBLE LIST

This page has just one name on it. This is deliberate and important to many of our readers as our friend Paul, triggered the “Lethal Mail” issue.

We actually get trolled… the dead get trolled by internet inhabitants who goad: “Paul didn’t commit suicide” and “Reekie wasn’t worried about debt.” Seriously? If you have nothing respectful nor decent to say based on facts from medically qualified doctors who give of their time to provide evidence under Oath (for example: here ~ source: here). It may be old fashioned, but we ask those whom list “duty to offend” on their CV (here) consider whether metaphorically kicking people who are disabled or doing your “duty to offend” those grieving the loss of family, whilst in pursuit of extra cash from your well paid job as an edgy London commentator, might be an offence too far (here).

The lesson there is to scroll-on-by the trolls and carry on with the our core purpose here.

That is to make sure this website gives birth to registered charity number #3.

Thereby combining the experience + the lessons + the best from charities #1 and #2.

That perfect storm in charity and volunteer terms will manage a fairly straight forward change of verb from “should” into “will”

Calum's List - Rule 2 - Akin to LJ Gibbs - Cop to Cop

There are only 60 people on this list as they include just those friends known to the team who originally ran the main (5,000 subscriber) DWP-Disability-Help website. The actual number of deaths is somewhere between 2,821 and 81,140 – click here.

1. Paul Reekie

Paul Reekie Calums List

Paul Reekie

Born 23rd January 1962. Died 10th June 2010

A qualified medical doctor stated Paul Reekie, was driven to suicide by UK welfare reforms. Dr Stephen Carty, a Leith GP, told the Welfare Reform Committee yesterday that letters received by Paul Reekie, removing incapacity and housing benefits would be stopped. Dr Carty said: Paul Reekie took his life following a work capability assessment”.

Witness Dr Carty Statement

To The Government: Click Here

“Paul Reekie didn’t leave a suicide note. He left on his desk two letters. One was a letter from the Department for Work and Pensions informing him his incapacity benefit had been stopped and the other was from the council informing him his housing benefits had stopped.”

As reported in Holyrood: Click Here and in the Westminster Parliament: Here.

The new (March 2025) relaunch of the original 2012 Calum’s List has an important matter to remedy in respect to Paul taking his life.

Some crass internet comments questioned whether Paul took his life because of money worries. We know the answer is “yes” because he said so when he was alive. Paul was evidently worried about money. Witness testimony is beyond the balance of probabilities.

Plus his GP, a medically qualified and highly experienced doctor confirmed this under Oath: Here.

We have a way to make sure Paul did not die in vain.

In some ways Paul may actually save lives as there is something, perhaps not too obvious, but a matter we have experienced at HM Court many, many times during the life of our first money advice charity (11 years: here), plus 11 more years as a not-for-profit debt advice association.

How? We will make sure the lethal toxicity of those two letters and their type are extinguished. Where appropriate our legally experienced and qualified team shall seek prosecution of authors and civil court remedy where culpability of an offence can be proven.

Those authors of letters which over-reach can see the resources exist here to do this. Significant finances with poetic resonance such as the £48,000 legal “bank heist” and similar are: here

In fact there are also some incredibly kind solicitors and barristers from whom we have received offers of pro bono (free) assistance (further reference: here).

That first “legal bank heist” was just one of 28 buildings (here) including three banks to date. So between th epro bono clegal counsel and financial resources, please can authours of the letters review their conduct and perhaps moderate it in line with industry guidelines.

Particularly those lethal letter writers that: “Use HM Courts as a tool of threat.” The lawyers and law officers here, all of whom have represented clients in front of judges have experienced the creditor’s agent being reprimanded by the judge for abuse and/or contempt by “using the court as a tool of threat.” We have witnessed the statements of many judges that “courts are here to dispense justice, we are not your tools, we are nobody’s tool.”

In Paul’s memory, we are irrevocably including within our articles of association for the new charity, this oft repeated quote…

Calum's List - Rule 2 - Akin to LJ Gibbs - Cop to Cop

Of course debt needs to be collected. Strangely, we can recommend many good, decent debt collectors who deploy humane means to collect money that is owed. From thousands of cases and hundreds of court actions we have a significant archive of evidence that proves a better outcome for creditor and debtor when a civilised, constructive approach is made.

There are good trade bodies, some of whom we need to reach out to (here), because a mutually constructive discussion on “lethal mail” is long overdue.

In a spirit of constructive dialogue, that may be to  increase some of the debt industry’s trade representative size to pro-actively recruit into their membership, those collection agents that are, without doubt outwith cardinal rules by the FCA regulator: here.

Our ethos away from the Calum’s List site is to engage in a constructive dialogue whenever a dispute arises.. Even within the Creditcare Money Advice Association (here), we found that by engaging in good faith with debtor and creditor, a fortune was saved in legal fees (our apologies to the lawyers). Meaning more funds ended up at the creditor’s balance sheet and a debtor had cleared more than would otherwise have been the case in closing an account.

So when we are asked “how” we will be reducing the toxic phenomenon of “lethal mail,” our legal beagles will first seek to discuss with creditors the common over reach in BIG RED INK text that threatens all manner of ills.

It is a fact that 1 in 4 of us will suffer mental ill health (evidence: here and here). Yet 88% of debt collectors we have surveyed, admit to having noactive” policy on checking whether the letters they write or the telephone calls they make are to a vulnerable person. “Vulnerable” was clarified as disabled, elderly (over 80 years old) and/or the 1-in-4 who have or have had a health issue as categorised in the DMV5 (UK here and US here).

Anyone familiar with Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice” will know that the money lender lost everything. So justice can be a two edged sword if a sloppy, culpable and too frequently a lethal or harmful approach is made by debt-collectors.

Surely a discussion with all stakeholders from both sides, debtor and creditor is better than devoting precious resources such as the £48,000 legal bank heist money (here) organisations that clearly over-reach the legal debt collection guidelines. Guidance: here. The law ~ VIP details: click here.

Lethal Mail Can Kill

Lethal letter extinction shall be our way of
paying respects to Paul Reekie.

Well worth repeating, again and again, until this is the norm…Calum's List - Rule 2 - Akin to LJ Gibbs - Cop to Cop

This website is being depoliticised from 2025 as 12 years of protests is exhausting and has not worked. It is time to ask a neutral arbiter such as HM Court to seek a fair remedy. Perhaps even return to the Highest Arbiter: here.

In fact, some of us have observed that instead of shouting at a politician when a friend commits suicide, if you sit down and present a well researched, peer-reviewed thesis, the politicians actually listen. On occasion, they will change the rules and the laws so that things really do get better.

Glacially slow at times, which is why this website will be giving birth to a new registered charity.

The new charity will NOT have the name “Calum” anywhere near it thankyou very much… Calum still thinks this should have been called “Mick’s List” and that is 12 years after they started it!
